The Health Sciences and Services Authority (HSSA) has served to aid the recent jump in health sciences economic activity in Spokane County through matching grants of up to $500,000. This funding source for health, bio-, and life sciences research has not existed before, and has directly invested over $15 million for research by public and private entities. HSSA has also supported (to date) over $50 million in extramural funding to Spokane (new dollars in our local economy), along with over $100 million in direct and indirect economic activity. The legislative leader on creation of the HSSA was then Senate Majority Leader and, as of this writing in the year 2022, Secretary of Commerce Lisa Brown.

As organizations involved in economic development activities, Greater Spokane Inc., Health Sciences and Services Authority of Spokane County (HSSA), Spokane University District, S3R3, and Evergreen Bio all have a vested interest in knowing the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats to growing the life science industry in the Greater Spokane area and Inland Northwest region. This knowledge will inform strategic decision-making and strengthen applications for continued, new, or increased grant funds.

The cluster is to enhance the growth and innovation of life sciences in a five-state area. The facility is to be the first phase and public face for growing research and workforce in the Bioscience realm. Academics-all colleges in the greater Spokane region have a place to come
together and advance Bioscience. A ‘think tank’ space gives neutral ground for education, seminars, and mentorship within the field. Local high schools need access to the facility to be inspired and expose the multi-faceted nature of the occupants of the building.

Developed by TIP Strategies, Inc., for Greater Spokane, Inc., sources included the US Census Bureau’s 2019 American Community Survey (ACS) 5-year average sample, US Bureau of Labor Statistics, and Emsi.
